YJ Residence Initiative

What We Are Doing

Rangatahi in Youth Justice Residences face extremely high levels of adversity while not receiving adequate support. These rangatahi experience poorer physical and mental health outcomes than their peers and our goal is to change that.

Our residential initiative is in the research and development stage. We have spent much of 2023 collecting information within residences and with external providers that deliver activities in residence. From here, we’ve developed a set of collaborative workshops and a practice framework that would enable internal teams and external providers to adjust the delivery of physical activity and improve the physical and mental well-being of their residents.

What We Believe

We believe that physical activity programs can be delivered as health and wellbeing programs; our goal next year will be to test these workshops. Our rangatahi deserve access to high quality programs that set them up for success when they are back in the community.

Our Goal

The long-term goal is to invest in a connector role that would facilitate the workshops and act as a connector for youth justice residences, external providers and transition/reintegration team members.
